Graph illustrates EGP’s elevation and temperature from 6/9/2025-6/18/2025
EGP was opened to ocean on June 9th and was tidal for 6 days. This was a bit shy of the 9-11 ideal target. Tidal exchanges increase salinity and water clarity. The elevation on 6/9/25 was ~3.43 ft NAVD88 (3.81 ft LMSL). Following the 7 day cut the elevation dropped to 0.90 ft NAVD88 (1.28 ft LMSL) as of 6/16/25.
Cuts are important for tidal exchange to maximize salinity and infuse the pond with clean, clear, and salty water. Eelgrass thrives in salinities 20 ppt or above. It becomes stressed below 15 ppt. If salinity drops to 10 ppt or less there is a likelihood of eelgrass loss. Ideally the post cut salinity target for the main body of the pond is 20-30 ppt with coves a bit fresher. These maps show bottom salinity levels before the cut on 6/9/25 and salinity levels 2 weeks after the cut on 6/23/25. The pond had an average salinity increase of 7.89 ppt after two weeks of mixing.
