TO CUT OR NOT TO CUT?

Edgartown Great Pond is currently quite high at 3.57 feet above LMSL. GPF is in regular communication with the Town of Edgartown’s Shellfish Constable, Rob Morrison, specifically with elevation and water quality data. We know there is the will to cut the Pond, but so far, no date has been announced. Two other factors to consider in addition to elevation are moon phase and weather. Cuts are often scheduled on or near a spring tide (new or full moon) and when the wind and sea are favorable. The risk of an ineffective cut during the summer is high.  If the pond closes without complete tidal exchange, the water temperature in the pond can rise quickly which can lead to an unwanted algae bloom.
We appreciate Rob’s proactive and attentive approach to pond management. An effective cut and flush increases the overall health of the pond for the entire season and decreases the likelihood of cyanobacteria blooms. We need at least 9-11 days of tidal exchange to flush out the nitrogen and phosphorus in the pond, to increase water clarity, and to raise salinity.

MV CYANO UPDATE

The Board of Health has issued a bloom watch based on elevated cyanobacteria levels. Please keep pets and livestock away from the water.

Should you have have further questions about risk, please reach out to Edgartown Health Agent, Brice Boutot, healthagent@edgartown-ma.us. Should you have any further questions about the testing procedures, please feel free reach out to GPF: mvcyano@greatpondfoundation.org
