New Katama Meadows Proposal

The controversial proposed housing development in Edgartown, formerly known as DRI 773, is once again under review with a slightly modified proposal and a new DRI number (DRI 780). The new DRI number means that the new proposal will not include comments previously submitted about the Katama Meadows project. When this development was under review in 2025, it received 70+ letters from the community in opposition of the development.

Please raise your voice for the Great Pond. If you have submitted a comment before or would like to submit one now, email morrison@mvcommission.org before the meeting on January 22.

A full discussion on this project will be held at the MVC on January 22 at 6:30 pm.

Please attend in person or via Zoom. You can register to comment during the hearing by emailing Lucy Morrison morrison@mvcommission.org before 5pm on Thursday, January 22nd.

This plan raises concerns about the additional nitrogen input and its detrimental impact on Edgartown Great Pond. Emily Reddington, our Executive Director says, “We know that 70% of the nitrogen impairment comes from two coves… Meshacket Cove and Slough Cove and we also know the tipping point is for this pond”.  This development is proposed for a parcel of undeveloped forest beside the Meshacket Commons affordable housing development and is inland from Meshacket and Slough Coves.

With the Pond currently rebounding and eelgrass returning, this plan would add nitrogen to the Pond and watershed, threatening its ecosystem resilience. The proposed development would destroy a native and intact forest ecosystem that is currenting absorbing nitrogen and add housing that will produce more nitrogen pollution in the Great Pond watershed.
