Great Pond Foundation Comic by Anna Cummings

GPF Comic Cover by Anna Cummings

Summer Science Interns at GPF spend most of their season out in the field and in the lab, collecting water quality data, monitoring cyanobacteria, and supporting summer outreach events. Last summer’s intern, Anna, did all of that, but she also brought a skill we didn’t expect, her art.

Although the summer is often very busy, during the few moments of free time, we encourage the Summer Science Interns to explore their own interests, projects, and research. Anna decided to make her project about communicating science through art. Her experience at Great Pond Foundations turned into a comic book that shares the science, curiosity, and humor behind coastal pond field work. It’s clever, beautifully illustrated, and a unique way of reaching science to a variety of audiences.

“I feel that comics have an incredible potential to reach new audiences and increase engagement in the scientific community. I also hope that people feel inspired to create their own comics, or simply to experiment with other modes of communication. I’m grateful to pursue this exciting project!”

We won’t spoil the story here, part of the fun is discovering how Anna translates water quality data, cyanobacteria, and field days into narrative and artwork. Her comic offers a fresh, creative lens on the importance of pond science and the people who do it.
