MV CYANO Wednesday June 5, 2024

In 2021 the Great Pond Foundation began a harmful algal bloom (HAB) monitoring program called MV CYANO; the program actively measured cyanobacteria concentrations in Edgartown Great Pond, Chilmark Pond, Tisbury Great Pond and Crackatuxet Pond. MV CYANO data were released weekly to the respective Town Boards of Health and color-coded maps depicting localized risk levels were posted on the MV CYANO webpage. Board of Health staff posted physical signs to inform the public of the harmful algal bloom threat level at the various bodies of water. The first year was a success; people from the Island looked to the signs to inform them of the safety of the pond water and the GPF website received local and global traffic of people reading about MV CYANO.

Please join GPF and Island Health Agents for a Zoom presentation that will review the 2023 MV CYANO data.
